What is Polyester and How It is Manufactured

This article was written as a response to the question:
Polyester is a material which is composed of 85% ester and dihydric alcohol mixed with terephthalic acid. This helps form a chain that links the esters inside the fibers. Further this reacts with alcohol and carboxylic acid and the result is a product that is very strong and non –abrasive. It also retains its original properties much longer.

We see Polyester all around us. It is one of the most common substances going around. There was a time when Polyester was unknown, till it was discovered by W.H. Carothers who was working with Du Pont. He observed that that alcohols and carboxyl acids had unique properties. These allowed them to be mixed and the result was the creation of a new type of fiber. Later the same man also discovered Nylon.

There were further developments and the work of Carothers was carried on by 2 British scientists named Whinefield and Dickenson. These two men greatly extended the scope of Carothers work. They proved that Polyethylene Terephthalate can form the basis of synthetic fibers. Thus Dacron, Terylene and Polyester could be synthesised artificially by a process called Polymerization. Polymerization is the bonding of 2 or more monomers to form a polymer. It is a chemical process that brings about this bonding.

Polyester synthetic Fiber is produced when alcohol and organic acid react together under man made conditions and fuse to form a new material, called Polyester.

Polyester has amazing qualities which are universally recognized. It is wrinkle free and has the property to return to its original form and shape. They wash easily and dry fast and hence are firs class material for wash and wear apparel.

Matters did not end there and further research in 1986 led to the discovery of another variety of Polyester called Microfiber. This was a much more resilient and thinner form of polyester. It could also serve as an insulating material and was thus used in sleeping bags and cushions. The polyester is also in great demand for curtains and similar items.

Actually Polyester is a material which is composed of 85% ester and dihydric alcohol mixed with terephthalic acid. This helps form a chain that links the esters inside the fibers. Further this reacts with alcohol and carboxylic acid and the result is a product that is very strong and non –abrasive. It also retains its original properties much longer.

This product gained in popularity from the 70s and now PET bottles and ropes are also made from this fiber. The product is durable and strong. In addition as it is a artificial product it can be easily manufactured unlike natural products that may have a limited supply. Clothes made from polyester need no ironing and are wrinkle free and thus a great help for the working class of people with a paucity of time.
