Guidelines for Style in Scientific Writing

Scientific writing is no different from other form of writing. It adheres to the basic principles of writing like accuracy,brevity,clarity,objectivity and comprehensiveness.

1. Good Scientific writing is accurate. The facts presented in a scientific paper must be accurate. The information should be written without distortion. Make certain that the information you give in the document is true. Since you strive for accuracy during experimentation, do not abandon your commitment to be accurate when you turn from discovery to the task of communicating what you discovered. 

Months or years painstaking labor may be rendered worthless because of a misplaced decimal point or misstated fact. A single error in calculation or a single illogical statement can cast doubt over the entire paper. To ensure accurate delivery information, check and recheck every statement in the document.

2. Good scientific writing is brief. Deliver the message to the reader in the shortest possible manner. Give only essential information and mot any non-relevant material. The choice of appropriate words is necessary. Very often, omitting unnecessary words in a statement will not only shorten it but also make it clearer. However, clarity and completeness must not be sacrificed for brevity.

3.Good scientific writing is clear. Ideas must be easily understood and well organized. There should be no ambiguities. Better organization of key thoughts and ideas can be achieved by preparing an outline before writing each part of the scientific paper or proposal. 

4. Good scientific writing is objective. Objectivity means that you should not be biased in presenting,discussing, and evaluating the information/findings. Weigh and select the most sufficient and most pertinent evidences to arrive at the simplest explanation of observations. Consider information from other researchers who are not in agreement with your results in explaining the observed data.

An objective scientist reports not only his successes but also his failures during his experimentation so that future researchers in related fields will be guided accordingly. The documented activities can also open avenues for further investigations.

5. Good scientific writing is comprehensive. In scientific writing, the message is given directly, rather than suggested as in the case of literary  writing. The reader is told what is important in the written material and is not expected to find out for himself. The style and format employed in scientific writing leaves the reader no room for interpretation other than what the author states. 

A scientific paper contains all necessary components is a complete research paper provided each component contains all the prescribed content and is written following the prescribed style and format.
